Noisy Reefs

Healthy hard coral spread across a shallow reef plateau. The closest thing in Tulamben Bay to a classic Indo-Pacific coral reef — schools of fusiliers, drumfish noise, and wide-angle photo conditions.

The story

The noisy coral reef.

The site got its name from the diver-audible crackle of a healthy reef — pistol shrimp snapping, parrotfish biting coral, the constant low-frequency hum of a reef doing its job. After all the muck and macro of the rest of Tulamben, Noisy Reefs is a return to colour.

Hard coral coverage is exceptional here — hectares of Acropora, Porites, brain coral, and table coral spread across a plateau from 10 to 18 metres. Fusilier schools hover above the reef, parrotfish graze the coral, and anthias clouds explode off the upper edges.

"Wide-angle photographer's relief after a week of macro."

Open Water-friendly, gentle currents, brilliant visibility. Pair it with Coral Garden for a colour-and-critter day, or use it as a check-dive for newer divers before stepping onto the Liberty.

Topography

How the dive unfolds.

A short walk south of the Liberty. Healthy hard-coral reef from 8 m down to 25 m. Named for the constant clicking of damselfish and snapping shrimp — the reef is so alive you can hear it through your regulator. Easy reef tour, no challenges.
