The story

Critters in the black sand.

If the Liberty is the headline dive, Coral Garden is where you spend the second half of the day. Walk north along the cobblestone beach for five minutes, kit up, fin out 40 metres, and drop on a sandy slope dotted with hard coral patches and a handful of pyramid-shaped bommies built up over decades.

It's a macro dive disguised as a reef. The coral is what catches your eye first — but slow down, hover over a single bommie, and the slope reveals itself: frogfish hiding in plain sight, ghost pipefish mimicking algae, scorpionfish wedged in cracks, and the occasional mantis shrimp peeking out of a burrow.

Because depth maxes out at 25m, Coral Garden is the perfect post-Liberty afternoon dive — you've spent the morning at depth on the wreck, now you decompress on a long shallow critter hunt. Open Water-friendly, photographer-loved.

Topography

How the dive unfolds.

A 5-minute walk north of the Liberty wreck. Drop in shallow on the cobblestone beach, swim out 30 m to the slope, and work the sandy slope as a long zigzag past three coral bommies at 8 m, 15 m, and 22 m. Slow is the rule — frogfish, ghost pipefish and scorpionfish are everywhere, but you have to hover and look.

Plan a 50–60 min dive: walk in, descend on the first bommie at 8 m, work the slope down past bommies 2 and 3 to 22 m, return along the slope above to the safety stop. NDL-friendly. Pro tip: sunset dive (16:30) — bommies come alive with hunting predators.

Open Water minimum. The deeper end is AOWD-territory (>18m); plan turn-around accordingly.

Beach entry. Kit up at the resort, walk down to the waterline on cobblestones, fin out 30–80 m to the drop-in point. Local women carry tanks for a small tip — included in your safari price.

Usually mild inside the bay. Pick-up only on outer-edge dives; inner sites are protected.

Best time of day

Sunset dive (16:30–17:30) — the bommies come alive with hunting predators and mantis shrimp emerge from burrows.
